Our Mathematics Curriculum – White Rose Maths

At Crow Orchard, we want every child to see themselves as a mathematician. We use White Rose Maths as the foundation of our mathematics curriculum, providing a carefully sequenced and ambitious approach that supports children to develop secure mathematical understanding, confidence and a genuine enjoyment of maths.

White Rose Maths is built around the principle of mastery. This means that rather than simply learning a method and moving on, children are given time to explore mathematical ideas in depth, make connections and develop a secure understanding that they can apply in different situations.

Small Steps, Strong Foundations

Learning is broken down into carefully sequenced small steps, with each new concept building upon what children already know. This helps children develop strong foundations and reduces gaps in understanding as they progress through school.

Children regularly revisit and retrieve previous learning so that important mathematical knowledge and skills become secure and can be used confidently.

Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract

Children are supported to understand mathematical concepts through a concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach.

They may begin by using practical equipment and manipulatives, move on to pictures, diagrams and models, and then develop their understanding of mathematical symbols and calculations. Models such as number lines, part-whole models and bar models help children to see the mathematics and understand why methods work.

Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving

Our mathematics curriculum develops three important areas:

• Fluency – becoming accurate, efficient and confident with number facts and mathematical procedures.

• Reasoning – explaining mathematical thinking, spotting patterns, making connections and justifying answers.

• Problem solving – applying knowledge and skills to unfamiliar and increasingly challenging problems.

We encourage children to explain how they know, not simply give an answer. Mathematical vocabulary and purposeful discussion are therefore an important part of every child's learning.

Challenge for Everyone

We believe all children can succeed in mathematics. Teachers carefully assess children's understanding and adapt teaching, resources and support so that children can access learning successfully.

Children who need additional support are given appropriate scaffolding and opportunities to revisit important concepts, while children who grasp concepts quickly are challenged to think more deeply, reason, make connections and solve increasingly complex problems rather than simply rushing ahead to new content.

Above all, we want our children to develop a positive relationship with mathematics. We teach them that mistakes are a valuable part of learning, that perseverance matters and that mathematical ability can grow.
